An Atwell Family Business
Lloyd (Butch) Atwell started as a floor covering installer in 1967 for Custom Floors in Westport, CT. There he spent his days installing sheet vinyl and linoleum. After some years he went out on his own as a floor covering subcontractor and worked for a number of stores in the local area.
In 1989 his son Frank Atwell began to work with Butch. Frank expanded the business to install hardwood, ceramic tile and laminates. He bought more tools and a box truck. In 1998 the business was growing, so Frank bought a bigger box truck and hired 6 helpers.
In 2008 Butch and Frank, purchased Floor Designs in North Haven, CT. Butch "retired" from installing flooring to manage the retail store, and Frank now runs the installation side of the business.
In 2010 they opened the second location in Hartford. Lloyd manages both locations along with 2 part time sales people. Frank still handles the installation crews for the stores and in addition has other retails stores and building contractors in Fairfield County as his accounts. He is now helped by his fiancé, Stephanie Toth, who assists him on the installation side of the business and goes out with the crews on installations. Butch's wife (Frank's mom), Fran Atwell, is now working in the store several days a week.
